Kolkata, West Bengal Education Minister Bratiya Basu said on Thursday that he has yet to get any communication from the Union Ministry of Education, which recommended seven states to adopt a general board for class 10 and 12, after an analysis that he took 66 percent of student failures last year.
Speaking to reporters, Basu said that students of West Bengal boards always perform well, and class 10 and 12 final examinations conducted by them record a high pass percentage.
“We are not listening to anything about this from the Center yet. However, whatever I read in the press is not relevant to our state. Except for the Kovid period, the candidates appearing in both secondary and higher secondary examinations in West Bengal have had a high pass percentage,” he said.
The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education conducts the middle examination for class 10, while Higher Secondary Education Class 12 of West Bengal conducts the final examinations.
This year, out of total 9,69,425 candidates, 86.56 percent approved the second examination, while 90.79 percent 4,82,948 candidates approved class 12 examinations.
PTI had said on Wednesday that the Ministry of Education recommended seven states to adopt a general board for class 10 and 12 after an analysis of the School Education Department, which found that they had calculated 66 percent of the student failures last year.
Seven states include Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Kerala, Manipur, Odisha, Telangana and West Bengal.
There are a total of 66 school examination boards in three national level boards and 63 state-level boards in the country.
While the top 33 boards cover 97 percent of the students, the remaining 33 boards cover only 3 percent students.
The school’s education secretary Sanjay Kumar said, “Common board for class 10 and 12 is ahead for ease of school education. Due to not having a normal board, there are poor educational results. We have recommended these states to adopt a general board.”
