Five years ago, Tucker Findlay was failing school. He was suffering from learning disability and a neurological problem. Because of this he could not read, write or count beyond 10. Now he is earning more than 6 digits i.e. lakhs in selling memorabilia online. Similar is the story.
Tucker’s journey began with a golf ball when he was 9 years old. He was playing with friends near his Sterling, Virginia home, where water flows downstream from 2 golf courses. “I found golf balls everywhere,” Tucker tells People. Collected them, cleaned them and then listed them for sale on Facebook Marketplace.
They sold out quickly – 2,000 in three days and Tucker, now 14, used his profits to buy more. He then hired friends to find and clean golf balls at 5 cents per ball and soon bought a kayak to find more balls. He bought a few thousand golf balls at local yard sales for $50 or $100. “He sold $5,000 worth of golf balls.”
Learned to count using golf balls
Tucker was not only becoming an entrepreneur, but he was also learning math by counting golf balls and selling them by weight. A fan of television shows such as Antiques Roadshow and American Pickers, Findlay invested his profits in antique and vintage toys, with the support of his parents.
Father left his job because of his son
Findlay’s father, Ryan, a former COO of a company, quit his job when his son was having difficulty with traditional learning and needed to be homeschooled. A few months and thousands of golf balls later, Tucker came across YouTube videos of people selling items they found at garage sales on eBay.
Findlay said, ‘Dad, I want to start an eBay store.’ So his father said, ‘What the hell are you saying?’ She convinced her parents to help her open an online store and found that vintage items were selling fast and turning huge profits – first an army jacket, then a brass bell. Ryan says he had items that were selling for $10 at the flea market. He would put them online for $100 and they would sell out in 5 minutes.
This budding businessman knows the art of selling goods. He once bought a BMX bike frame that was missing wheels and other parts for just $6 and then sold the bike’s disassembled parts for $500 within 24 hours. Findlay sold a Barbie doll for $1,000 and 600 sports cards for $20,000.
