Why Tata, MG and Mahindra still lead the charts?
Tata’s continued growth can largely be attributed to the depth of its EV portfolio in the affordable segment. Models like the Punch EV and Nexon EV have helped the brand reach a wider audience. Punch EV starts While the price of Nexon EV is Rs 9.99 lakh 12.49 lakh (ex-showroom), making them accessible to a large section of urban and semi-urban buyers.
Second-placed MG has also benefited from competitive pricing. Comet EV, starting from 7.49 lakh and the price of Windsor EV is 13.99 lakh (ex-showroom) has helped MG stay ahead of Mahindra in monthly volumes.
Mahindra, despite having several electric models, operates at a higher entry point. Its most affordable EV, the XUV400, is priced at 17.49 lakh (ex-showroom), which places it firmly in the mid-range segment.

How VinFast stayed ahead of Hyundai and Kia
VinFast currently sells only two electric SUVs in India: the VF6 and VF7. VF6 price is 17.29 lakh, while the VF7 starts from Rs 21.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Despite this relatively premium positioning, VinFast has managed to outperform brands like Hyundai and Kia in December.
Hyundai’s EV presence is currently limited to the Creta EV, which debuts at Rs 18.02 lakh (ex-showroom). The Kia Carens operates in the same price band as the Clavis EV, priced at Rs 17.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
A major factor working in VinFast’s favor is its local manufacturing strategy, which has allowed it to price its vehicles more competitively than other premium EV brands operating in India.
Among luxury and premium players, BMW India sold 343 units in December, Mercedes-Benz India sold 237 units and Tesla India sold 68 units. These figures highlight how VinFast has positioned itself ahead of many high-end brands, despite being relatively new to the Indian EV market.
