Debutant filmmaker Anuparna Roy scripted history by winning the Oriesti Award for Best Director at the 82nd Venice Film Festival for her film, Songs of Foregoton Trees.
While a visually impaired Anuparna gave a heartbreaking speech on the stage, dedicating his victory to all women around the world, it was his striking comment on Palestine that shook a controversy. His comments attracted strong reactions in the country.
Talking to ANI, Anuparna Roy voiced his strong stand against “injustice” in the world. “I mean whatever I had said on the festival. It was said with the intention of pointing to injustice around the world. If I support Palestine, if I stand against injustice, it doesn’t make me less Indian. People are thinking that I have spoken about it for the first time, but I have not mentioned an award in Russia.”
He said, “I request everyone to celebrate the achievement and do not ‘political’ in this way. I do not represent anything,” he said.
Anuparna Roy said to explain how filmmaker Anurag Kashyap advised him to avoid comments related to Palestine at the event.
“People are claiming that I had commented under the influence of Anurag Kashyap, but I was strictly advised by my manufacturers, my guru, and Anurag Kashyap that I do not have to talk about it. I went beyond his advice and now I understand it. Anuparna said.
The filmmaker said, “I will keep speaking against injustice. I believe that such things should come in the discussion, whether it is Kashmir, Murshidabad or Gujarat.”
Anupahar Roy stood for Palestine, accepting his Best Director Award at the Venice Film Festival. “Every child is entitled to peace, freedom, liberation and Palestinians, there is no exception … It is a responsibility to stand by Palestine at this time ….” I can bother my country, but it doesn’t matter to me now, “he said, as according to the time limit.
