Directed by filmmaker duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, the series is part of the vast global espionage universe that began with the mothership show starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden.
Honey Bunny is the third installment of the franchise, starring Matilda De Angelis, following Citadel and the recently released Italian franchise Citadel: Diana. “For Honey Bunny, we have put in a lot of work from conceptualizing it to executing it and seeing it come to fruition. This is amazing. “I am already happy with it because of the quality and the way it looks,” Varun told PTI in an interview.
He said, “Ultimately, it depends on the audience. Everyone has tried their best. I hope it will take Indian cinema forward. I know it will do well and I feel good about it.” ” ,
The Prime Video series, which also stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu, is pitched as an intriguing narrative that combines elements of a gritty espionage action thriller with the heart-warming charm of a love story.
“When stuntman Bunny (Varun) recruits struggling actress Honey (Samantha) for a side gig, they are thrown into a high-stakes world of action, espionage and betrayal. Years later, as their dangerous past As it unfolds, estranged Honey and Bunny must reunite and fight to protect their young daughter, Nadia,” the official storyline reads.
Written by Sita R Menon with Raj and DK, the show is executive produced by Hollywood filmmakers Anthony and Joe Russo. It will premiere on November 7.
For Varun, known for films like Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Badlapur, October, Jugjug Jeeyo and Bhediya, Honey Bunny was a rare project for many reasons.
“From the love story between the two spies to the meeting of these two damaged people, everything was great. Then Raj and DK executed it, Sita wrote it and Sam played Honey. So, it was for me It was a big deal… Amazon getting it back and Russo being on board, these things happen sometimes,” the actor said.
Varun revealed that he received many offers for his first series but he was immediately attracted towards the idea of Citadel: Honey Bunny.
“A lot of offers have come from OTT platforms, some in the action space too. If I had wanted something else for this, that too would have happened, like The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) being in it. It’s just that in this show everything was happening one after another,” he said.
The actor also said that when he heard the story of the show, Samantha’s name immediately came to his mind for the lead role.
“When we talked about it, the first person who came to my mind was Samantha, even without her saying so. I thought, ‘If Sam does this, it’s going to be huge, and we’ll compete very well with each other.’ We have a unique kind of chemistry. I think Raj and DK were only listening to this, nothing else.”
Citadel: Apart from Honey Bunny, Varun is equally excited about his upcoming releases: Baby John, an action drama backed by Atlee; Karan Johar’s home production Sunny Sanskari’s Tulsi Kumari; And with her filmmaker-father David Dhawan in the family entertainer Jawaani Toh Ishq Hona Hai.
He will also be seen in the Sunny Deol-led Border 2 and the sequel to No Entry alongside Arjun Kapoor and Diljit Dosanjh. “I have a lot going on now and it’s time to come out,” he said. This is very good. I’m not complaining at all; I am very happy.”
The collaboration with his father is especially special as it marks their reunion after the reboot version of Main Tera Hero and Coolie No. 1. “He is the only director who yells at me. He also lectures me on all the other things I’m coming up with right now. She is excited about ‘Honey Bunny’; They loved the trailer,” he added.
The actor believes that there is a lack of well-made comedy films in Bollywood, adding that although critics may call such films “not logical”, audiences enjoy watching them.
“We have made good comedy films and they have been successful. If a comedy is generally good and makes you laugh, it becomes criticism-proof because it creates word of mouth and people are laughing in theaters. It doesn’t matter what people say about it not being logical. As long as people are entertained in theatres, word of mouth spreads,” he said.
“Many comedies, which sometimes became cult classics, such as ‘Andaz Apna Apna’, were poorly reviewed and considered flops. We’re making less comedy; We should make more because they uplift the society and laughter, in general, is the best medicine,” he said.
Citadel: Honey Bunny also stars Kay Kay Menon, Simran, Saqib Saleem, Sikandar Kher, Soham Majumdar, Shivankit Parihar and Kashvi Majmundar.
