According to US health officials, about 90% of the US ice cream producers have promised to remove artificial colors from their products within the next three years.
The step is part of a comprehensive voluntary effort encouraged by the Trump administration to eliminate synthetic colors from American food supply due to potential health concerns.
Major American Ice Cream Manufacturer to leave artificial colors soon
Announced on Monday, 15 July, the commitment includes ice cream and about 40 companies in the frozen sweets industry, although specific brands were not revealed.
President of the International Dairy Foods Association, Michael DiCs said that seven petroleum-based dyes-red 40, green 3, blue 1, Blue 2, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6- K6-K6- K 6- K. will be phased out by 2028. US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marthi Makeri called Shift “a Renaissance Moment for Health in the US”, and said new natural options, such as Gardenia (Genipin) Blue, have already received FDA approval. This plant-based dye can now be used in sports drinks, confectionery and other products.
The FDA first banned Red 3 earlier this year due to the risks of cancer seen in animal studies. While companies have to stop using dye by 2027, Makeri issued a letter on Monday, rapid action was encouraged.
Despite widespread praise, some health experts take care that ice cream would not be made healthy food by removing alone colors. “It is still a meal that should be consumed in moderation,” said Deanna Holsher, a Nutritionist at the University of Texas, said that sugars and saturated fat have been added, significant contributors to chronic disease.
Makri also indicated that upcoming federal dietary guidelines may re -evaluate the prolonged ideas on saturated fat and heart disease, calling the current state a “70 -year performance of natural saturated fat”.
Consumer gives voice to his concerns

According to industry data, the average American consumes approximately four gallons ice cream. Federal authorities have encouraged manufacturers to adopt fruit juices, plant extracts, and natural color agents obtained from similar sources.
