A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll has put the spotlight on the upcoming presidential election, revealing a competitive race between Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and former Republican President Donald Trump. The poll, conducted among 4,129 American adults, including 3,481 registered voters, shows Harris holding a slight lead over Trump, 46 percent to 43 percent. Among likely voters, that lead widens slightly to 48 percent for Harris and 45 percent for Trump.

A significant portion of survey respondents preferred Trump’s approach to key issues such as the economy and immigration.
Nearly 70 percent of participants believe their cost of living is on the wrong track, while 60 percent think the economy is headed in the wrong direction. Trump leads Harris on the economy (46 percent to 38 percent) and immigration (48 percent to 35 percent). Immigration emerged as a top priority for voters, with many indicating it should be a focus in the next president’s first 100 days in office.
Benefits of Harris
Despite lagging on key issues such as the economy, Harris outperformed Trump on concerns related to political extremism and threats to democracy, with 42 percent of respondents supporting her approach compared to 35 percent for Trump. She also remained ahead of Trump on abortion and health care policies.
Harris entered the presidential race in July, after withdrawing from President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign following a disappointing debate performance against Trump in June. At the time, Trump was considered the frontrunner due to concerns over the economy and high inflation during Biden’s presidency. However, inflation rates have recently begun to decline, which is reshaping voter sentiments.
As the Nov. 5 election approaches, the race between Harris and Trump is becoming tighter, with both candidates highlighting their strengths and weaknesses on a variety of issues. With voter sentiment running high and the stakes higher than ever, the presidential race is set for an intense final phase.
