Helicopter carrying Kedarnath pilgrims loses control, makes emergency landing:
A helicopter carrying seven people, including pilgrims, had to make an emergency landing due to a technical snag in Uttarakhand’s Kedarnath on May 24. According to an official, the aircraft landed a few metres away from the helipad at the Himalayan temple. There were seven passengers, including six pilgrims and the pilot, on board. All are safe, the official said. According to Rudraprayag District Magistrate Saurabh Gaharwar, the helicopter took off from Sirsi helipad for Kedarnath on Friday morning. Citing preliminary findings, he said its rear motor developed a technical snag, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing a few metres away from the Kedarnath helipad.
Several Delhi University colleges received bomb threats:
According to officials, over a dozen colleges of Delhi University, including Lady Shri Ram College, Hansraj College and Ramjas College, received bomb threats through email on May 23. At 4:38 pm, calls were received informing about bomb threats at Lady Shri Ram College and Sri Venkateswara College. According to a statement from the Delhi Fire Services, firefighters and Delhi Police immediately reached the spot. The local police, bomb squad and bomb detection team along with dog squad reached LSR College and conducted a search but nothing suspicious was found, the official said.
Find Porsche Crash:
On May 22, the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) cancelled the bail of a 17-year-old juvenile from Pune who was involved in an accident involving two motorcycle-borne technicians in Kalyani Nagar last Sunday. He has been moved to an observation home till June 5. The accused’s parents can meet him for an hour twice a week. The police argued for the 17-year-old driver’s remand before the juvenile justice board, claiming that he was not safe outside and could be attacked. The police also said that people would be safe if he was inside the detention home. Prashant Patil, the accused’s lawyer, told the JJB that the boy was depressed, which led him to develop a habit of drinking alcohol.
Supreme Court refuses to issue direction to Election Commission to upload voter turnout data:
The Supreme Court on May 24 declined a plea by an NGO asking it to issue directions to the Election Commission to release polling station-specific voter turnout data during the Lok Sabha elections on its website. The apex court cited the inability of the Election Commission to mobilise staff. A vacation bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma said it cannot pass such orders at this stage as five phases of polling have been completed while two are remaining. The bench said the Election Commission would have difficulty in mobilising manpower to put up the voter turnout data on its website.
A severe cyclone is forming in the Bay of Bengal:
According to the Meteorological Department on May 24, the depression formed in the Bay of Bengal may intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and hit the adjoining coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh around midnight of May 26, causing heavy rains in the coastal districts of the state and northern Odisha. This is the first cyclone to hit the Bay of Bengal this pre-monsoon season and will be named Ramal by Oman as per the cyclone naming system of the North Indian Ocean region. The wind speed of the cyclone may be 120 kilometers per hour on Sunday.
