IMA chief demands to declare hospitals as safe zones and give respectable compensation to Kolkata victim’s family
In protest against the horrific rape and murder and brutality meted out to a trainee medical student at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) announced a 24-hour shutdown of non-emergency medical services (from 6 am Saturday to 6 am Sunday). IMA chief Dr RV Asokan demanded during the protest that all hospitals should be declared safe zones like airports so that doctors across the country can work without any fear. Secondly, the IMA chief said that there should be a central law to prevent violence against healthcare workers. Also, he demanded that the victim’s family should be given proper and dignified compensation.
ISRO aims to launch first Gaganyaan mission by December: Chairman
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) aims to launch the first mission of the ambitious Gaganyaan project by December, ISRO chief Somnath said. So far, some of the rocket hardware for the human space programme has arrived at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre here, and integration of the crew module is underway at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Trivandrum, ISRO Chairman S Somnath said. They are working on Gaganyaan’s first mission G1, which is the first unmanned mission, he said. The current status is that the rocket, the S200 stage, the L1 and the C32 stage are all at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.
Union Cabinet approves three metro rail projects worth over Rs 30,000 crore in Pune, Thane and Bengaluru
The Union Cabinet has approved three metro rail projects in Karnataka and Maharashtra costing Rs 30,765 crore. Apart from this, the Cabinet has approved two corridors of Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase 3. This corridor costing Rs 15,611 crore will be operational by 2029. About 44.65 km of new metro lines will be added in Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase 3. The first corridor will run between JP Nagar Phase 4 and Kempapura covering 21 stations, and the second will run from Hosahalli to Kadabagere covering 9 stations.
SEBI said that all investigations against Adani except one have been completed
In response to US short-seller Hindenburg Research’s allegation that Sebi was moving slowly in the probe – possibly because its chairman had invested in the fund at the centre of the investigation – the board announced that it had completed all but one of the allegations levelled against the Adani Group. Further, the market regulator chief called the allegation ‘baseless’ and termed it an attempt at ‘character assassination’. The regulator, Sebi, in a statement said it has duly investigated the allegations levelled by Hindenburg in its damning report against the Adani Group in January 2023, including employing offshore investment funds to prop up the stock price and non-disclosure of related party interests.
Tungabhadra dam in trouble, officials claim situation ‘not alarming’
The 71-year-old Tungabhadra dam located in Hospet, Karnataka is in trouble. Hours after the BJP-JD(S) padayatra demanding the resignation of CM Siddaramaiah ended, the opposition has found a new issue to target the ruling Congress party even as officials claim the situation is not alarming. There are concerns over the possibility of flooding in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, two of the three states that share water from the Tungabhadra dam, after the 71-year-old chain of one of the 32 crest gates broke late Saturday night, resulting in the release of thousands of cusecs of water.
