Liverpool University has become the second UK University after Southampton University, to get an official letter (LOI) from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to set up a campus in India. During a ceremony held at the Taj Mahal Hotel in New Delhi, Loi was handed over to LOI, in which Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and UGC Interim Chairman Dr. Vineet Joshi participated.
Speaking especially AyraNews24x7.comVice Chancellor’s professor Tim Jones shared the details about the upcoming Bengaluru campus. He discussed the limits of courses, including Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Game Design, Business Management, Accounting and Biomedical Sciences – and confirmed that the degree given would be the same in the content and quality given in the UK.
Here are the excerpts edited from the interview:
Question: Which courses will be introduced in the Indian campus?
A: Initially, we will start with relatively small number of programs and will gradually expand. The focus on courses such as computer science will be focused – including artificial intelligence and data science – business management, accounting and finance, biomedical sciences and game designs, which are quite unique. These courses reflect the strength of the university in Liverpool and are expected to be highly attractive to both students and employers. Over time, we intend to develop portfolio of degree programs.
Question: Will the fees in the Indian campus be more economical than studying in Britain?
A: We have not yet finalized the fees, but announcements will be made in the coming weeks and months. Since we aim to open the campus in August 2026, we will soon share all the relevant details about the fees for interested students.
Question: Will the students of India have a chance to go to the UK campus?
A: Absolutely. Student mobility is very important. Liverpool University already attracts a significant number of Indian students and Russell is the second largest recruitment of Indian students among the group universities. We will encourage and convenient the movement between our premises, depending on the preferences of each student.
Question: What kind of teachers and faculties will be in the Indian campus? Will the UK professors also teach there?
A: When we open the next year, some UK professors will teach in the Bengaluru campus, but most of the faculty will be admitted locally. We believe that it is important to be a strong local educational employee. This model has been successful in our international campus in China.
Question: Will the degree given in the Indian campus be the same in the UK?
A: Yes, it will be exactly the same degree, following the same quality standards. There will be no difference. We follow a similar approach in our China campus, where the degree has the same value.

Question: Will students get internship or job support?
A: Yes, we are developing a strong partnership. We have already signed several mUs with companies in Bengaluru and will continue to expand these relations. In Liverpool, we support students supporting – especially international students – placements, internships and securing work experience, and we plan to repeat it in Bengaluru. We also aim to encourage entrepreneurship among our students.
Question: When will the entry start, and there will be a scholarship for Indian students?
A: The campus is about to open in August 2026, with teaching to resume. Entry criteria and procedures will be announced in the coming weeks and months. The scholarship will be available, and more details will be shared in the next few months.
