UGC has urged students planning to pursue online education to beware of fake degree programmes.
Many students prefer to opt for online courses to further their studies. They have a wide range of options to choose from, some even offering degrees. Since there are many options available to us, there remains a risk of coming in contact with fraudsters. Regarding this, UGC (University Grants Commission) has issued a warning notice to people planning to enroll in online courses. UGC has urged students planning to pursue online education to beware of fake degree programmes. According to reports, these fraudulent organizations use wrong abbreviations to duplicate relevant qualifications or schemes to destroy the student’s career. The Commission highlighted the “10-day MBA programme” as an example of such fraud.
“Some individuals/organizations are offering online programs/courses with abbreviations/acronyms similar to recognized degree programs of the higher education system,” the public notice said. UGC Secretary, Professor Manish R Joshi, further said in the notice that they make the degree nomenclature, duration and admission qualifications through a formal notification in their official gazette. This is done only after the approval of the Central Government.
As per further details, universities recognized under Central, Provincial or State Acts and authorized by Act of Parliament have the right to confer degrees.
“Higher education institutions are also required to obtain approval from the UGC for offering any online degree program as per UGC regulations,” Manish R Joshi said. An authorized list of HEIs (Higher Education Institutions) offering online courses and permitted online courses is available on the website deb.ugc.ac.in. The Commission advises candidates to thoroughly verify the validity of any online program they plan to enroll for. This can also be done by contacting the concerned institute to inquire about your preferred program.
The official X account of UGC shared the notice through a tweet. “The UGC issues a public notice regarding misleading abbreviations in the names of universities and colleges,” it said. The University Grants Commission operates under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India.
