The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a draft graduate course under the Learning Results-based course Framework (LoCF) combined with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The proposed course aims to integrate traditional Indian knowledge systems, including ancient mathematics, astronomy, and cultural heritage.
In mathematics, the draft arts focuses on concepts such as traditional Indian timekeeping, Indian bijaganit (Indian algebra), and importance of Puranas. Students will study techniques from Vedic mathematics, including paraverture yozayat formulas for polynomial division, and learn about the Indian calendar (Panchanga) and its role in determining the auspicious time (monthly) for rituals. The curriculum also examines the ancient observatories, the leading meridians of Ujjain, and traditional time units such as Ghatis and Vighatis and modern systems such as IST and GMT.
Tomar of the course committee chairman Sushil’s Tomar said, “This course is a transformational initiative in mathematics education. It has been developed through careful consultation, which ensures academic excellence and practical relevance.”
He said, “It aims to produce graduates capable of contributing to research, innovation and national development, especially in interdisciplinary regions,” he said.
The curriculum also includes texts like Surya Siddhanta and Aryabhaim, including Brahma Day (Brahma Varsa) from ages and Kalpas and the cosmic time cycle to divine chakras like Vishnu Varsa and Shiva Varsa.
Under LocF, courses are divided into discipline specific core (DSC), discipline specific elective (DSE), and generic elective (GES) to ensure a mixture of core and interdisciplinary learning. Other proposed courses include Kautilya’s Arthur Shastra, Indian Conflict for Freedom, and political views from classical works like Upanishads, Ramayana, Mahabharata and Kalidas. Concepts like Ram Rajya are associated with corporate governance and ESG framework which are in commerce education.
However, the draft has criticized student groups such as SFI, who have expressed concern over its content. SFI has announced several protests on 25–26 August in campuses and state and central universities including symbolic burning of draft copies, followed by march at UGC offices and regional centers on 27 August.
UGC has opened a LocF draft for public reaction, inviting comments and suggestions from students, faculty and other stakeholders by 20 September 2025.
