NMC head Dr. Abhijeet Sheth says that UG, PG medical seats can increase by 8,000 this year.

National Medical Commission (NMC) head Dr. Abhijeet Sheth has said that in the current academic year, the number of undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats in India is expected to increase by around 8,000. Consultation for NEET-OG is already running, with the completion of the first round and the second starts by 25 August. PG counseling is expected in September.

Conflicts were raised that the availability of medical seats this year could be reduced this year when the CBI discovered an alleged nexus, in which the officials of the Union Health Ministry, members of the NMC, middlemen, and representatives of the private medical college accused them of manipulating the regulatory structure. Following the July rift, NMC had stopped seat increase and approval for new courses.

The CBI has named 34 people in its FIR, including eight Health Ministry officials, one National Health Authority Officer and five doctors who were part of the NMC inspection team.

However, Dr. Sheth indicated that the process had resumed. He said, “Along with my appointment, Chairman of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (Marb) has also been appointed. We have completed the inspection of UG medical seats on priority basis, and the assessment is in progress,” he told PTI. “We expect an increase of about 8,000 seats (UG and PG seats) based on the number of applications obtained in this academic year.”

Currently, India has 1,18,098 undergraduate (MBBS) seats – 59,782 in government institutions and 58,316 and 53,960 postgraduate seats in private, out of which 30,029 are in government and 23,931 are in private colleges.

This year on speculation of a decline in MBBS seats, Dr. Sheth said, “Due to ongoing (CBI) inquiries, the number of UG seats may decrease. However, overall, the number of seats is eventually increased by 8,000 or even after the completion of the total inspection process.”

On postgraduate admission, he said: “The process for inspection of the medical college, which has applied for new PG seats, has been started and … we believe that new seats will also be added to the PG consultation process.”

The next exam is still closed somehow

Dr. Sheth also addressed Query on the National Exit Test (Next) for the final year MBBS students, which is mandatory under the NMC Act, calling it a “novel concept”, but emphasizes the need for consensus.

“The next is a novel concept, there is no doubt, but there are many unanswered questions. We have to ensure that this model is compatible with medical education that we are providing our students,” he said, pointing to challenges for a central model from state-level university examinations, to set a central model, difficulty level and “positive perception” between students and faculty.

He said, “The fear among the students will have to be overcome and their confidence level is to be created for this exam. Awareness will have to be made that this exam will not be difficult for them, but it is going to be a proper assessment for them,” he said, “He said, seeing that its rollout” will take a little time “.

Numbers and quality balanced

India has seen a sharp increase in the number of medical colleges since 2014, raising concerns about quality. Dr. Sheth insisted that the expansion and quality should go by hand.

“The increase in numbers is necessary to bring permanent quality in medical education in long -term and uniformity of distribution in healthcare across the country,” he said, “he said. “At the same time, while increasing the number of colleges, we have to ensure that the quality of medical education is not thin.”

NMC, he said, has begun to strengthen the accreditation standards on faculty, infrastructure and clinical materials, and skill training, virtual equipment and a combination of e-learning is promoting a “fidgital” model of medical education.

On integrating private and government resources, Dr. Sheth said: “We want to tap the opportunity to integrate these institutions for the purpose of medical education, to ensure that we can get better clinical resources for interested medical students. And, therefore, integration is very important, and this is the concept that my team would like to take forward.”
