Manila. Recently, the US Army deployed a typhoon missile system in the Philippines. On which China has expressed strong objections. Due to which the increasing military tension in the Indo-Pacific region has been exposed. The typhoon system is capable of launching the Tomahawk Land-Atac Cruise Missile and SM-6 air-defense missile. This has significantly replaced the strategic balance in the area. With the deployment of missile systems in Northern Luzon, its range extends to the South China Sea, Taiwan and some parts of the mainland China. Due to which the safety concerns of Beijing have increased further.
Despite China’s vocal protest and demanding removal of this missile system, American and Philippine officials have defended deployment. Saying that better preventive capabilities are needed amid growing geopolitical stress. However, the US Army has said that it will not conduct a live-fire test of the typhoon system during the upcoming joint military exercise in the Philippines. Nevertheless, this system remains the center of strategic discussions in the field. The dispute of typhoon deployment shows a large -scale power struggle between the US and China. Which has an impact on regional security and alliances.
What is a typhoon missile system?
The Typhoon missile system has been developed by the Lockheed Martin Company under the Long Range Program Program of the US Army. It has been designed to fill the gap between the army’s princely strike missile and long-range hypersonic weapon system. It is capable of firing two types of missiles: the Tomahawk cruise missile, which has a range of about 2,000 km (1,240 mi), and SM-6, which can target enemy ships, aircraft and upcoming missiles.

This system was first deployed in the Philippines as part of the Salaknib 2024 joint military exercise. Which included American and Philippine forces. It was taken to an airspace in northern Luzon via an US Air Force C-17 Globmaster, where it was included in military exercises. While the system has not been used in live-fire exercises, the Philipinian soldiers have been trained on its operation and maintenance.
