Tripura assures admission for all class 12 pass students.
Tripura Higher Education Minister Kishore Burman has assured that all the students who pass the class 12 board examination of the state will be given admission in government degree colleges. This assurance comes in view of recent student protests on graduation entry into Ramthakur Degree College, conditionla, where a professor was allegedly suspended to illegally accept more than 100 students for the signature of the principal.
“I assure students who have approved higher secondary examinations that they will get admission in government degree colleges, but the subjects and colleges cannot be of their choice. This year, more than 24,000 students approved the higher secondary examination, while the colleges in the state have 33,000 seats,” said Burman.
Highlighting efforts to address the issue, Burman said that he has directed the principals of degree colleges in AARAartala to increase the number of seats available so that more students can protect the entry.
Regarding the student movement at Ramthakur College, the minister clarified, “The department has nothing to do with what happened outside the premises.”
Meanwhile, when contacted, Principal Papri Das Sengupta, Principal of Ramthakur Degree College, said that the institution has already accepted more students with the permission of its capacity. He said, “We cannot allow more entry. Admission was done purely through an online portal on merit,” he said.
Following the disputes, it was alleged that a professor at Ramthakur Degree College accepted more than 100 students to make the principal’s signature, demanding transparency in the admission process demanding the student protest. The professor’s suspension is seen as a step to curb irregularities and restore the order in the college.
This year, the number of students passing higher secondary examination in more than 24,000 and available college seats is available at 33,000, officers are working to get admission to all eligible students, even though it means adjusting the subjects or colleges allotted to them.
