PANAJI: The 56th International Film Festival of India is organizing a special tribute to actor Dharmendra at its closing ceremony this weekend, an official said.
The veteran actor died on Monday morning at his residence in suburban Mumbai. He was 89 years old.
“We received the unfortunate news of Dharam ji’s demise on Monday. One minute silence was observed at the closing ceremony of the Film Bazaar as a mark of respect.
“We will also pay tribute to the beloved legend during the closing ceremony of the festival,” NFDC Managing Director Prakash Magdum told PTI.
The screening of “Sholay” in 4K restored version was scheduled at IFFI on November 26, but the organizers have canceled it citing technical reasons.
The festival will also organize a session titled, ’50 years of Sholay: Why does ‘Sholay’ still resonate?’ Will be with the film’s director Ramesh Sippy on 27th November.
The bike from “Sholay” has been displayed in a glass enclosure at the Inox theater in Panaji since the first day of the festival, but now it has become a tribute of sorts to Dharmendra, who shot the hit song ‘Yeh Dosti’ with Amitabh Bachchan on the bike.
Magdam said, “The motorcycle displayed at the festival complex was introduced as a special attraction this year to mark the celebration of 50 years of ‘Sholay’. But it has now also become a tribute to Dharmendra ji, as when visitors see it, they cannot help but remember the iconic song ‘Yeh Dosti’ and his unforgettable presence.”
The bike was showcased to celebrate 50 years of the film starring Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra, in which they played the roles of Jai-Veeru. The two friends travel around on a motorcycle with a sidecar singing ‘Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Todenge’.
The five-minute song sequence filmed on this bike took 21 days to shoot, read the information displayed with the bike.
