Brent Chapman, a 33-year-old North Vancouver in Canada, is one of the first Canadian people to undergo Osteadonto Keratoprosthesis (OOKP), usually known as a tooth-in-I surgery. Doubt initially, she was encouraged by a woman in Australia, who received vision after the procedure.
OOKP involves removing a patient’s tooth, embedding a plastic optical lens inside it and implanting it into the eye. Teeth are used as their dentine is strong and resistant to rejection.

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) quoted Moloni as saying, “This is a rare operation that most people have not heard of, even if you are an eye surgeon.”
Surgery is performed in two stages, in addition to months. First, a tooth is removed, shaped and fitted with a lens. The patient’s eye is prepared by removing the scar tissue and putting a soft cheek tissue.
The tooth is transplanted into the cheek to develop new tissue. In the second surgery, it is transplanted into the eye. This allows the patient to look through a small black circle.
High success rate
Although the complex, the process has a high success rate, 94% of patients with 2022 Italian studies maintained the vision after 27 years after surgery. Nevertheless, it certainly carries risks such as infection and total vision loss.
Moloni said, “With any kind of ocular surgery, there is a chance that we can introduce the infection and lose all our visions.”
Despite this, the ability to restore vision makes it a valuable option for those who have no other option.
