In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Amol Naikwadi, joint managing director and preventive healthcare expert, Indus Health Plus, shared, “In India, thyroid diseases are common and affect people of all ages and socioeconomic status. According to Indus Health Plus, 13% of women and 6% of men have elevated TSH levels. According to the National Family Health Survey-4, about 10% of Indian families had at least one member suffering from a thyroid condition.

He further added, “According to a study published by Lancet, hypothyroidism is the most common form of thyroid affecting every 11% of the Indian population. Additionally, dietary behaviour, stress and heredity all play a role in the increased prevalence of thyroid problems in India. This is especially true for women as they are more susceptible to thyroid diseases and these are often associated with hormonal changes that occur during menopause and pregnancy.

According to him, there are many thyroid diseases, some of which include:

  • Hypothyroidism, also known as underactive thyroid: Underactive thyroid causes the thyroid gland to produce insufficient thyroid hormone, which slows down the body’s metabolism. This can result in fatigue, weight gain, and cold intolerance, among other symptoms.
  • Hyperthyroidism: Hyperthyroidism is a disorder in which the thyroid gland secretes more thyroid hormone than normal, which speeds up the body’s metabolism. Symptoms include sweating, fast heartbeat, weight loss, anxiety and irritability.
  • Goitre: A goiter is a swelling at the base of the neck which is a sign of an enlarged thyroid gland. Thyroid problems, iodine deficiency and other reasons can be responsible for this.
  • Thyroid Nodule: Growths within the thyroid gland are known as thyroid nodules. Although rare, most are benign; A small percentage may develop into malignancy. Large lumps may cause discomfort or difficulty swallowing; However, symptoms are rare.
  • thyroid cancer: Thyroid cancer is usually diagnosed as a lump or lump in the neck, and it starts in the thyroid gland. It is generally treatable and not very prevalent, especially if caught early. Surgery, radioactive iodine, thyroid hormone therapy, or a combination of these may be used as treatment.
  • Graves disease: Graves’ disease is an autoimmune condition that causes hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid gland. This happens when the thyroid produces excessive amounts of thyroid hormone because the immune system mistakenly attacks it. This causes symptoms such as heat intolerance, anxiety, restlessness, weight loss, rapid heartbeat and enlarged eyes (Graves ophthalmopathy). Radioactive iodine therapy, antithyroid medications, and sometimes surgery are possible treatment options. In most cases, reducing thyroid hormone production and treating symptoms are the main goals of managing Graves’ disease.

Detection of Thyroid Disorders:

Amol Naikwadi reveals, “Adequate care and awareness about thyroid problems is required to detect this condition early. To do this, routine blood tests that measure T4, T3, and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) help diagnose abnormalities. A TSH level that is frequently elevated may indicate hypothyroidism, while one that is low may indicate hyperthyroidism. In short, timely diagnosis depends on regular health checkups and consultation with medical professionals.

Emphasizing that maintaining thyroid function requires taking a comprehensive approach to general well-being, Amol Nayakwadi highlighted the following lifestyle choices that can support thyroid health –

  1. balanced diet: A balanced diet should contain plenty of zinc, selenium and iodine – important for thyroid function. Include whole grains, dairy, nuts and seafood in your diet. Also, limit your intake of processed foods and highly iodized salt.
  2. regular exercise: Get regular exercise to increase metabolism and maintain general health. Exercise can reduce the risk of thyroid problems and help regulate thyroid function.
  3. Dealing with stress: Prolonged stress can affect thyroid function. To support physical and emotional well-being, include stress-relieving practices such as yoga, meditation and deep breathing exercises.
  4. Enough Sleep: Get enough good sleep, as it is essential for thyroid hormone balance and other hormone balance.
  5. Regular checkup: Make time for regular medical checkups, especially if you suffer from symptoms like fatigue, mood changes or weight fluctuations or if thyroid problems run in your family.
