Nobel Peace Prize: The Nobel Peace Prize winner was announced amid the ongoing war in the Middle East and the Ukraine-Russia war. This time the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo has received the Nobel Peace Prize. This organization advocates ‘a world free from nuclear weapons’. The Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo was formed in the year 1956. It is also known as Hibakusha. Its mission is to spread awareness around the world about the harm caused by nuclear weapons.

Hibakusha is a Japanese word meaning ‘bomb survivor’ or ‘person affected by radioactivity.’ It is commonly used to refer to people affected by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States at the end of World War II.

Nargis had received the award last year
In the year 2023, Iranian journalist and human rights activist Nargis Mohammadi was given the Nobel Peace Prize. His organization Defenders of Human Rights Center is banned in Iran. The Norwegian Nobel Committee had received applications from a total of 286 candidates for the Peace Prize this year, out of which 89 were organizations. This Under the award, a prize money of 11 million Swedish crowns or approximately 1 million dollars is given. The award will be given on 10 December in Oslo. This day marks the death anniversary of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, who established the prizes.

honoring survivors
The Nobel Committee has praised Nihon Hidankyo for raising its voice against nuclear weapons. Next year it will be 80 years since the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in which approximately 1 lakh 20 thousand people died instantly. In the years that followed, thousands of people died due to injuries and exposure to radiation. “In awarding the Nobel Peace Prize this year to Nihon Hidankyo, we want to honor all those survivors who, despite painful memories, chose peace,” the Nobel Committee said.

Organization and Membership
Nihon Hidankyo is the only nationwide organization of survivors of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki (hibakusha). It has member organizations in all 47 Japanese prefectures. Thus it represents almost all organized hibakusha. All its officers and members are Hibakusha. As of March 2016, the total number of surviving hibakusha in Japan is 174,080. Thousands of hibakusha live in Korea and other parts of the world outside Japan. Hidankyo is collaborating with those organizations in their work to protect the lives and rights of these people.

Compensation to the state for damage caused by atom bomb. The responsibility of the State for starting the war, which led to the damage caused by the nuclear bombing, should be acknowledged and compensation should be provided to the State.

Improving current policies and measures on the protection and assistance of hibakusha.

No use of nuclear weapons in 80 years
The Nobel Committee acknowledged that nuclear weapons have not been used in any conflict for nearly 80 years, for which some credit also goes to Nihon Hidankyo. However, today the nuclear prohibition is under pressure as countries modernize their arsenals and new threats emerge.

Impact of Hibakusha Testimonies
The stories shared by survivors have sparked widespread opposition to nuclear weapons, and encouraged others to think seriously about the devastating effects these weapons have on humanity and civilization.

As time passes, new generations in Japan are continuing the hibakusha’s mission of educating the world about nuclear disarmament and peace.

This culture of remembrance helps maintain the nuclear taboo, and ensures that the lessons of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are never forgotten.
