The accident occurred when the plane which reached Kolwezi Airport after taking off from the capital Kinshasa slipped off the runway during landing. The photos and videos of the incident surfacing on social media are quite frightening.
The minister’s communications adviser Isaac Nyembo said the plane caught fire moments after taking off from the runway. Fortunately, the 20 passengers on board the plane were taken out in time, due to which a major tragedy was averted. However, the luggage of the passengers got burnt and damaged. The minister and officials were on their way to take stock of the horrific accident at the Kalondo mine near Kolwezi, where 32 people died on Saturday. This incident again raises serious questions on the security arrangements in the mining sector.
