Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1 has been released, but the Netflix series has generated some controversy with the opening scene. Many have criticized it for its depiction of a conversation between Will and Vecna, with some alleging that it depicts an attack on a child.
Conservative political activist Jack Posobiec is among those criticizing Netflix. He has been part of the group of people who have also criticized the streaming giant for its ‘woke’ content. However, many others seemed to agree with him, and pointed fingers at how Vecna was portrayed overall with the villain’s image tending to raise eyebrows. Netflix or the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, have yet to respond to this criticism.
One person commented on The uproar intensified when Russian state-controlled RT news also posted about it. He said of Vecna, “He also strokes the boy’s forehead… very disturbing.”
What happens in the opening scene between Will and Vecna?
The opening scene shows Will trying to outrun a Demogorgon in the Upside Down, but it doesn’t go quite as planned, and he ends up being brought to Vecna’s lair. There, Will is pinned against a wall while a tentacle enters his mouth and squirts some fluids from Vecna. As the tentacle continues to feed fluids to the twitching Will, Vesna caresses his forehead and comments that they are going to do a lot of ‘beautiful things’ together.
The phallic imagery of a tentacle in a man’s mouth has led to accusations online. However, when Posobiec made a similar claim he was corrected by X’s community notes themselves. “This is a complete fabrication,” the note begins, adding that Season 5 Episode 1 does not reflect what Posobiec and others are alleging.
However, it is true that Vecna’s plan revolves entirely around children. He explains to Will that when he took him to the Upside Down, Will showed Vecna how easily a child’s mind can be manipulated and broken. As a mental patient, Henry or Forest or Vecna are well placed to take advantage of this. In fact, he continues to do the same thing – appearing as Mr. Whatsit – a kindly stranger – in Season 5. Thus, Vecna shows manipulative behavior, and she makes it clear to Will that the children are an important part of her plan. In the current season he is trying to get his hands on several kids, with some endgame in mind.
However, the allegations seem a bit extreme despite the visual connotations of the opening scene. Given that Stranger Things has a TV-14 rating, meaning those under 14 will require parental guidance, it is unlikely that the producers would intentionally send such a message. However, there is growing controversy surrounding it, with the second volume set to be released on December 25 and the finale airing on December 31.
