Northwest has the largest collection of rock art in the world in the Murujuga site on the Burup Peninsula in Northwest Australia. Covering about 100,000 hectares, it has more than 1 million engraving, known as Petroglyph, with animals, planting plants – and perhaps the oldest depiction of a human face.
Australian Environment Minister Murray Watt said in a statement that the site is “immense cultural and spiritual significance” for tribal Australians and was named a Cultural World Heritage Site in the 47th session of the United Nations World Heritage Committee in Paris.
Watt said, “For more than 50,000 years, Narda-Nagali people have protected and managed this important land and seas,” adding it will now provide another level of protection.
However, the site is near a multicolored natural gas export hub, a multinational dollar operated by Woodside Energy Group Limited, with fossil fuels, as well as opponents of tribal and environmental activists have launched a campaign against gas giant, and warned the site caused by emissions from woodside facilities.
The activists have also initiated legal proceedings against the planned expansion of the LNG plant. Woodside’s North West Shelf plant is currently allowed to operate by the end of this decade, but the company has received initial approval from the Australian government to increase its lives to 2070.
A Woodside spokesman said, “This is a well -worthy global belief of Petroglyphs and Murujuga’s unique living cultural values, for Australia and the world,” a Woodside spokesperson said in an email response to questions, working with the parties concerned to add the company “continuous security and management of important sector at this world level.”
A recent study in emissions on the site indicated some increased hole in the rocks due to industrial emissions, but data did not support principles that could affect acid rain artwork.
LNG from the North West Shelf is exported to companies in Japan, South Korea and China. This feature is also a major contributor to the supply of domestic gas in Western Australia.
