Officials said Kasturrangan, the former president of ISRO, died in Bengaluru on Friday.
According to a PTI report quoting officials, “He left for the heavenly residence at his residence in Bengaluru this morning. His body will be placed at the Raman Research Institute (RRI) on 27 April to pay the final honor.”
According to the report quoting family sources, Kasturrangan, who was 84 years old at the time of his death, is left from his wife and two sons. Sources also said that the former ISRO chief was suffering from age related diseases for the last few months.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned the death of Kasturrangan.
Here are 10 things to know about the Kasturrangan of the former ISRO president.
1. Kasturrangan served as the chairman of the drafting committee on the New National Aduteation Policy (NEP) as well as as Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University and as Chairman of Karnataka Knowledge Commission.
2. Kasturarangan served in ISRO for nine years till 2003.
3. He was the first director of the ISRO Satellite Center, where he oversees the new generation spacecraft, the Indian National Satellite (INSAT-2) and the Indian Remote Sensing satellites (IRS-1A & 1B) as well as activities related to the development of scientific satellites.
4. Under his leadership, ISRO successfully launched several satellites including the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and recently, the first successful flight test of all important geosicronous satellite launch vehicles (GSLV).
5. He also worked as a member of the Rajya Sabha (2003–09) and as a member of the then Planning Commission of India. Kasturrangan was also the director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru from April 2004 to 2009.
6. The former ISRO chief was born on October 24, 1940 in Ernakulam, Kerala at CM Krishnaswamy Iyer and Visalakshi.
7. From Tamil Nadu, his family settled in Chalakudi in Thrissur district. His mother was meeting Palakkad Iyer family.
8. Kasturirranganan earned his Bachelor of Science from Bombay University with Honors and Master of Science Degree. In 1971, he received a doctorate in experimental high energy astronomy while working at Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad.
9. As an astronomer physicist, his interests included research in high energy X-rays and Gama Ray astronomy as well as optical astronomy. He also contributed significantly to the study of cosmic X-ray sources, astronomical gamma-rays and the impact of cosmic X-rays in the lower environment.
10. Kasturarangan was awarded the Padma Vibhan in the year 2000 for his exemplary work. The space scientist has also won several other awards through his life for his contribution.
