Delhi Airport: Air India flight Al 542 was about to depart from Indira Gandhi International Airport to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad in a few minutes. Before the flight could take off for its destination, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs entered the plane. Before anyone could understand anything, the team reached near a seat of the plane and started searching for something by putting their hands under it.

After a long exercise, Customs AIU gets hold of something that shocks everyone present there. Actually, AIU recovered 24 gold bars one by one from inside the plane’s seat. The weight of the gold bars recovered from the plane’s seat has been estimated to be around 2.7 kg. The price of the recovered gold in the Indian market has been estimated to be around Rs 1.87 crore. AIU has seized this gold recovered from the Air India plane under section 110 of the Customs Act.

How the case was revealed
According to a senior customs official, the Air Intelligence Unit had received information that two passengers arriving at IGI Airport on IndiGo flight 6E 2168 from Mumbai had bad intentions. As soon as the information was received, the AIU team laid a trap in Terminal 2. While coming out of the terminal, the identity of both the passengers was confirmed and they were taken into custody. During interrogation, both of them told that they have to leave for Hyderabad by Air India flight Al 542.

This gold was brought from Dubai
During interrogation, both the passengers also told that gold was hidden in a seat of this flight going to Hyderabad. This gold was hidden while coming from Dubai to Hyderabad. After reaching Hyderabad, they did not get enough chance to take out the gold from the aircraft. The purpose of traveling by Air India flight today was to take out the gold hidden under the seat. After this revelation by both of them, the AIU team reached this Air India plane and the search operation was started.

Gold worth crores recovered from under the seat
According to a senior customs officer, a search of the seat was started on the information given by the two accused. During the search, 24 gold bars were recovered from under the seat, whose total weight was found to be around 2798 grams. These gold bars were hidden under the seat by putting them inside a pike. After this recovery, both the accused were arrested and the gold was confiscated.
