The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to cancel the NEET-UG 2024 exam in a decisive hearing of the controversial case.

Thus, the Supreme Court ruled that there would be no re-examination, suggesting that the demand to cancel the exam was not justified. The Supreme Court ruled that counselling and other admission processes would continue as scheduled.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra resumed hearing the case today. The NEET-UG exam is under scrutiny due to alleged irregularities and concerns over paper leaks.

The order further stated that this would “cause disruption in the admission schedule, and adversely impact the medical curriculum.”

Delivering the judgment, DY Chandrachud said, “In the interim order of this court, identifying the main issues of dispute, this court had asked the NTA, the Centre and the CBI to make disclosures on affidavits. The role of the CBI comes into picture when the FIRs in Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Bihar and Jharkhand are transferred to the CBI.”

“This was a governance issue and the government very conveniently did not raise the issue of maintainability of these petitions,” senior advocate Mathews Nedumpara, representing the petitioners, said.

Several petitions were filed in the Supreme Court and high courts after the results were announced on June 4. The petitions sought cancellation of the NEET-UG 2024 exam held on May 5, re-examination and a court-monitored probe. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) confirmed that the paper leak in the NEET-UG case took place at the Hazaribagh centre in Jharkhand.
