September’s supermoon will be the second of four consecutive supermoons this year, following August’s Blue Moon.
The term ‘supermoon’ refers to the full moon that occurs when the Moon is at or near perigee, the closest point to Earth in its slightly elliptical orbit.
During these times, the Moon may appear somewhat larger in the sky, although the difference may be subtle and difficult for many observers to see with the naked eye.
Supermoon Lunar Eclipse: Will it be visible in India?
The partial lunar eclipse will be visible in North America, all of South America and most of Europe. It will also be visible in eastern parts of Africa, western parts of Asia and Russia and some areas of Antarctica, according to reports.
However, this eclipse will not be visible in India.
Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow on the Moon. These events further highlight the Earth’s spherical shape, as the shadow forms a curved shape on the surface of the Moon.
The lunar eclipse in September will be small, with only the upper portion of the moon entering the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, known as the umbra. However, the report says that such an eclipse will give those using binoculars or telescopes an interesting view of the moon’s craters and other features.
Supermoon Lunar Eclipse: When to watch it?
Viewers can watch the eclipse according to their location. For viewers living in the Eastern Time Zone of the US, the eclipse will enter its darkest phase on September 17 at 10:44 pm Eastern Daylight Time.
The solar eclipse will be visible before dawn in Europe and Africa on September 18. In London, the solar eclipse will be at its largest at 3:45 am British Standard Time on September 18.
