Success Story: Meet Bhavya Shah, who once worked at a McDonald’s counter, is now an IAF officer

Thousands of youth aspire to become pilots in the Indian Air Force, but only a select few are successful after going through a rigorous selection process. One of those few people is Bhavya Shah, a resident of Mumbai. His journey to becoming a Flying Officer is a testament to his determination and tireless efforts. Starting from the bustling city of Mumbai, Shah’s journey ended with him joining the Indian Air Force on December 13, 2025, fulfilling his long-time dream.

Shah’s early years were marked by frequent transfers due to his father’s job transfers. The fast-paced life of Mumbai and moving between quieter cities helped him develop resilience, adaptability and mental toughness – skills that proved invaluable in his military career.

During his college years in Pune, Shah worked part-time at McDonald’s, reports AyraNews24x7 Hindi. Reflecting on this period, he says, “It was my first taste of independence. I learned to manage my money, my time, and myself.” The discipline and work ethic he learned during this time contributed significantly to his rigorous defense training.

A turning point in Shah’s life came when he joined the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Air Squadron in Pune. Wearing a uniform, attending training camps, and flying microlight aircraft solidified his goal. He recalls, “This is where my dream of serving the country truly came true.” NCC provided a solid foundation to his ambition to join the Indian Air Force.

Shah faced many challenges during his journey. He made many attempts at Service Selection Board (SSB) and prepared for years. His persistence paid off when he was accepted into the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai in April 2024.

Within just three months of training, Shah made it to the top candidates in the Indian Air Force merit list. Donning the blue uniform, he achieved his goal of becoming an IAF pilot, a dream developed over years of hard work and self-confidence. From managing orders at a fast-food counter to preparing for advanced flight training at the Air Force Academy, Bhavya Shah’s story is a source of inspiration for young defense aspirants across the country. The mantra given to him by his NCC superiors – “Tagda Raho” (Stay Strong) – keeps him motivated to keep progressing.
