Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar has officially retired from his role as Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) when he reaches the age of 65 years. Starting his term in February 2022, Kumar led several transformational reforms aimed at re -shaping India’s higher education scenario.
In particular, he played an important role at the beginning of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for graduation and postgraduate admission, enhancing uniformity and fairness in the admission process in universities. His leadership was marked by a strong focus on student-centric reforms, which promotes greater access, transparency and quality within the higher education sector.

Born in the academic journey of Mamidala village, Nalgonda district, Telangana, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, IIT began with MS and PhD in Electrical Engineering, followed by doctoral research at Waterloo University in Canada.
His time in the office was marked by unprecedented student-centric reforms and far-reaching institutional changes.
His ability to surrender to Academia and his ability to join people of diverse background was commendable.
Before leading the University Grants Commission (UGC), he served as the 12th Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) from 2016 to 2022. Kumar also played respected academic and research roles at IIT Delhi, including coordinators of NXP President Professorship and VLSI design programs. His career reflects a mixture of educational excellence and leadership which shapes India’s higher education scenario.
