A new study has revealed the importance of being physically active in reducing the risk of chronic back pain.

Working from home has now become a lifestyle pattern, we spend most of the day sitting on our chairs or sofas, working on our laptops, hunched over. We tend to hunch over and scroll through our phones even after work is over – this is a harmful habit and can have long-term effects on health. A recent study led by Juua Norha of the University of Turku showed how a sedentary lifestyle can make back pain worse. Cutting back on sitting time may help people, especially those who are overweight and physically inactive.

The study targeted participants with metabolic syndrome – a combination of health conditions associated with increased risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. The study was conducted on 64 adults between the ages of 40 and 65 who were overweight or obese. The participants were further divided into two groups – one group was asked to reduce their sitting time and include light exercise in their daily routine, while the other group was asked to continue their normal routine.

Effect of light exercise on back pain

The participants were monitored over a six-month period – those who added light exercise to their daily routine showed stable back pain, while the inactive group saw a steep increase in back pain intensity. Therefore, the study concluded that reducing inactivity can help cure back pain to a great extent.

When we have back pain symptoms, we should try to reduce the time we spend sitting, and instead incorporate light workouts such as walking or brisk walking into our daily routine, study lead author Juua Noorha, a doctoral researcher and physiotherapist, said in a media release. Needed
