Mamata Banerjee-led All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has once again resumed its seat-sharing talks with the Congress for the upcoming Lok Sabha 2024 elections, sources said.
This comes after the Congress Party and the Samajwadi Party (SP) finally agreed on seat-sharing arrangements as part of the India Bloc in Uttar Pradesh.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier decided not to be part of the India faction in her state. Sources said his party’s talks with the Congress party on a possible seat-sharing formula have now resumed. While TMC is ready to give two-five seats to Congress in West Bengal, it wants Congress to give two seats in Assam and one seat in Meghalaya.
Assam sends 14 and Meghalaya one member to the Lok Sabha respectively.
An agreement in West Bengal will boost the morale of the crisis-hit Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), especially after the JD-U’s exit.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, out of 42 seats in West Bengal, TMC won 22 and BJP won 18 seats. Congress won the remaining two seats.
Sources said TMC may give Behrampur, Malda South, Malda North, Raiganj and Darjeeling to Congress in West Bengal. He said that in return TMC is adamant on its demand to contest elections from Tura Lok Sabha seat of Meghalaya. In 2019, TMC got 28 percent votes in Tura seat, while Congress got only nine percent votes.
Talks on alliance are going on elsewhere also. According to sources, Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi has agreed to contest elections on four Lok Sabha seats, while Congress will field its candidates on three seats as per the seat-sharing formula.
According to the agreement, AAP will contest from South Delhi, New Delhi, West Delhi and North-West Delhi seats while Congress will field its candidates from East, North-East Delhi and Chandni Chowk seats. While a formal announcement is awaited, the BJP had won all seven seats in both the 2014 and 2019 general elections.
The Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), an alliance of major opposition parties, came together last year to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The inaugural meeting of the opposition alliance was held on 23 June in Patna, Bihar.
