Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore at the ISS
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore have been on the International Space Station (ISS) since June. Launched on June 5 aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, it was the first crewed mission. It reached the space station on June 6. In August, NASA determined that it would be “too risky” to return the astronauts, leading to the decision to return Starliner to Earth without its crew. The spacecraft landed successfully on 6 September.
Williams and Wilmore continued their duties as part of the expedition, now planned to return to Earth in February 2025. What was initially intended to be a one-week test flight has now been extended to approximately eight months.
