Two women scientists are among the six winners of the Infosys Prize 2024 for economics, engineering and computer sciences, humanities and social sciences, life sciences, mathematical sciences and physical sciences, announced by the Infosys Science Foundation (ISF) in Bengaluru on Thursday. This award was instituted by ISF in 2009.

The two women who have been selected for the award this year are Neena Gupta for Mathematical Sciences and Vedika Khemani for Physical Sciences.

Gupta, Professor in the Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics Unit at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, was honored for his work on the Zariski cancellation problem, a fundamental problem in algebraic geometry, first presented in 1949 by one of the founders of modern algebra, the Oscar Presented by Zariski. Geometry.

According to a statement released by the ISF, he proved in 2014 the surprising result that Asanuma’s three-dimensional affine variety gives the negative answer to Zariski’s original cancellation problem in positive characteristic.

Khemani, Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at Stanford University, has been recognized for his extensive and groundbreaking contributions to theoretical and experimental nonequilibrium quantum matter, particularly in the discovery of time-crystals.

Professor Arun Chandrasekhar of Stanford University’s Department of Economics won the Economics Prize for his contributions to the study of social and economic networks, using innovative data sets and applying theoretical methods from machine learning and computer science.

The Engineering and Computer Science Award will be presented to Professor Shyam Gollakota, School of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Washington, for his research in socially relevant areas such as smartphone-based affordable health care devices, batteries for low- and middle-income countries. Augmentation of human auditory sensing with open computing and communications, and artificial intelligence.

The Infosys Prize 2024 in the Humanities and Social Sciences is awarded to Mahmood Curia, Lecturer in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology, University of Edinburgh, for his seminal contributions to the study of Maritime Islam from a global perspective with a special focus on Kerala. Pre-modern and early modern eras.

The Jeevan Vigyan Award is given to Siddhesh Kamat, Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, for his discoveries related to bioactive lipids, their receptors and their metabolism and signaling pathways.

Speaking at the event to announce the award, Chris Gopalakrishnan, Chairman, Infosys Science Foundation, said the Infosys Prize has played an important role in recognizing the brightest minds whose contributions are shaping the future of research and science.

He added, “This year, we again focused on early career researchers under the age of 40, recognizing their immense potential and the promise of paradigm-shifting work.”

The award in each category consists of a gold medal, a citation and a prize of US$100,000 (or its equivalent in Indian Rupees). Narayana Murthy was also present at the event organized at the ISF office in Bengaluru.

According to the press note issued by ISF, one of the largest awards announced in India, the previous winners of the Infosys Prize have received many prestigious international awards including the Nobel Prize (Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo), Fields Medal, etc. (Manjul Bhargava and Akshay Venkatesh), the Dan David Prize (Sanjay Subramaniam), the MacArthur ‘Genius’ Grant (Sunil Amrit), the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics (Ashok Sen), and the Marconi Prize (Hari Balakrishnan).
