Tuntun, who lived a life full of pain and struggle, made millions of people laugh with her comedy and opened a new path for women in Hindi films.

But one joke made him sad forever. It so happened that during the shooting of the film ‘Babul’, Uma Devi slipped and fell. Dilip Kumar, who was present on the set, said smilingly. Hey, someone pick up this tinkling sound. Just what then. This name suited him so well that the entire film industry started knowing him as Tuntun.
But the journey of becoming Tuntun was not easy. Uma Devi was born on 11 July 1923 in Amroha, UP. She was two and a half years old when her parents were killed in a land dispute. By the time she was nine, her brother was also murdered. In this way she became orphan at a young age. Relatives supported her but treated her like a maid. Didn’t get a chance to study. His heart was only in music and radio was his companion.
Started off as a singer
At a very young age, a young man named Akhtar Abbas Qazi heard his singing and was impressed. But after partition he went to Pakistan. On the other hand, Uma Devi left the tight life of Delhi and quietly moved to Mumbai. Here he met Naushad. Naushad was so impressed by her voice and courage that he gave her a song in the film ‘Dard’. Her song ‘Afsana Likh Rahi Hoon’ released in 1947 became a superhit and she became a star overnight. Later Akhtar Abbas Qazi came to Mumbai and married her.
Identity became the reason for the increase
I gave up singing after marriage and when I faced financial problems, I started looking for work again. This time Naushad advised him to do comedy. The increased weight and funny style made him perfectly fit for this work. Uma Devi placed a condition that she would do her first film with Dilip Kumar only and that is what happened. After the death of her husband in 1992, Tuntun’s mind started turning away from films. And on 24 November 2003 she said goodbye to the world. Despite a life full of pain, struggle and difficulties, she made millions of people laugh and opened the way for comedy for women in Hindi cinema.

Created history with comedy
