A dermatologist explained in an Instagram video why you should not sleep with wet hair as it can lead to fungal infections.
Do you blow-dry your hair after washing it? Or do you let it air dry and go to sleep without drying your scalp? If you’re the latter, we have some news for you. Leaving your scalp wet can lead to fungal infections. Yes, you read that right.

Consultant dermatologist Dr Amna Adel shared a video on Instagram of what happens when we leave our hair wet. In the clip, Dr. Adele stressed that a moist scalp can easily become a breeding ground for fungus. Although our scalp has natural yeast, damp hair can create the perfect environment for this yeast to thrive and increase the risk of getting fungal infections aka ringworm.
Never sleep with wet hair!
In the clip, Dr. Adele explains that if we don’t blow-dry our hair, ‘we can look like a very old piece of bread.’ Getting straight to the question of whether or not we should blow dry our hair, he emphasized, “The first thing we all need to understand is that we have a natural yeast and fungus that Lives on our skin and our scalp. [rent-free]And it is called Malassezia. One thing about fungus is that it loves nothing more than moisture.
Dr. Adele said, “So if you are one of those people who is lazy about drying your hair after washing it. You just sleep on wet hair and leave it for hours and hours. You’re creating the perfect storm, the perfect environment for this yeast to basically grow, and that inevitably leads to seborrheic dermatitis, also known as dandruff (sic).
The dermatologist added that sleeping with wet hair “also increases the chance of getting a fungal infection called tinea capitis, aka ringworm.” “Trust me, you don’t want this on your head because this is the worst case scenario, it can actually cause your hair to fall out. Always dry your hair after washing your head.
Finally, he said that although leaving your scalp moist may encourage fungus, it will not prevent fungus from growing on your scalp.
