EVM row: Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray) leader Aditya Thackeray has said that the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena has won the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha seat and the party will go to court claiming it. Shinde Sena leader and Maharashtra Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar hit back at the MLA from Mumbai’s Worli, alleging that he ‘always tries to create confusion.’
A tough fight was witnessed between the two factions of Shiv Sena in the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency. Ravindra Waikar of Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena defeated Amol Kirtikar of Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) by a margin of just 48 votes.
Aditya Thackeray gave his reaction on the ongoing controversy regarding the tampering of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) after the results of Lok Sabha Elections 2024 were announced.
Later, Shiv Sena leader Deepak Kesarkar accused Thackeray of creating confusion and claimed that the Shiv Sena (UBT) was in no position to “face the public” in the Maharashtra Assembly elections due later this year.
Shinde Sena MLA said, “Aditya Thackeray is still very young. He always tries to create confusion…”
Allegations of EVM tampering sparked a political row on Sunday, with Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi, Aditya Thackeray, Akhilesh Yadav and other opposition leaders citing a media report that claimed a relative of Shiv Sena’s Mumbai North West Lok Sabha candidate Ravindra Waikar was seen using a mobile phone connected to an EVM during vote counting on June 4.
Media reports said that a relative of Waikar, who won the seat by a margin of just 48 votes, had used a mobile phone to unlock the electronic voting machine (EVM) during the counting of votes.
Deepak Kesarkar said, “Whenever EVMs reach the counting booth, signatures are taken by all the counting agents after confirming that the seals are correct. After the votes are counted, signatures are taken again. It is a very transparent process.”
On Monday, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MLA Rohit Pawar claimed that at least 18-19 leaders, who had joined hands with Ajit Pawar to create a split in the NCP, will return to the Sharad Pawar faction after the monsoon session of the Maharashtra Assembly.
Shinde Sena leader Deepak Kesarkar refuted the claim, saying, “All NCP members have supported Ajit Pawar wholeheartedly.”
Rohit Pawar on Monday claimed that several NCP MLAs never said anything wrong against party founder Sharad Pawar and other senior leaders after the split in the organisation in July 2023.
“But they have to attend the assembly session and get development funds for their constituencies. So they will wait till the session is over (before making changes),” the grandson of NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar said.
He said, “18 to 19 (NCP) MLAs are in touch with us and Pawar sahab. They will come to our side after the monsoon session.”
