Congress MP Shashi Tharoor took a dig at those who ‘attacked’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi for praising him.

Tharoor said, “I did not say a single word of praise, I just described the speech.”
‘I may disagree’
Shashi Tharoor said that being interested only in “ideological purity” is not the way to get the job done and sometimes people need to be “more willing to cooperate across ideologies”.
The Congress leader asked how a state can meet its targets without talking to the Centre.
He said, “You really have to say that it is in our interest to cooperate in the interest of our people… So yes, I may disagree with the ruling party, but they are the ruling party, they have the mandate from the country. I will work with them.”
Tharoor said that if the central government offers a scheme with a condition that it will give money to the state only if a certain amount of work is done, he will “discuss” it with the Centre.
“I will see how I can implement it within the scope of my conviction, but I will take the money because my people in my state need the money. That kind of thing, that kind of cooperation, is necessary in my view,” the Congress MP said.
He also cited a recent example from Kerala, where a central scheme was rejected, and funds were refused, even when the state was “broke and needed funds”.
“There are schools, government schools, which are leaking, roofs are collapsing, where we don’t have money for desks and blackboards, and we are now behaving ideologically pure and refusing to take money from the Centre. This is madness. This is taxpayers’ money. This is our money. This is our money,” Tharoor said.
Tharoor got angry
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor faced sharp criticism in his own party for his comments on PM Modi’s speech.
Last week, Tharoor took to Twitter to post in detail references to PM Modi’s speech at the sixth Ramnath Goenka lecture organized by The Indian Express.
In a post on
Tharoor had said, “…PM Modi said he has been accused of being in ‘election mode’ all the time, but he was actually in ’emotional mode’ to address people’s problems.”
“Overall, the PM’s address served as both an economic vision and a cultural call to action, urging the nation to be desperate for progress,” he said.
Tharoor said that despite a bad cold and cough, he was happy to be among the audience.
Responding to this, Congress leader Sandeep Dixit had asked that if Tharoor feels that the strategies of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and PM Modi are better then why is he in the party.
Dikshit said Tharoor should clarify his remarks and if he does not do so, he is a “hypocrite”.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Supriya Shrinet said she did not find anything “commendable” in PM Modi’s speech but found it “insignificant”.
Shrinate said that he did not understand how Tharoor found a reason to appreciate it.
