The people who carried out the attack were in contact with this handler named UKasa through an app called Session. As soon as the news of terrorists using Session App came to light, it has now come into the headlines. In India, the session has been downloaded more than 10 lakh times so far.
Session is a free, open-source messaging app that focuses on privacy and security. The main objective of the session is to provide users with the facility of secure chatting without sharing personal information. It is available on Android, iOS, Windows, Mac and Linux. Session has been developed by an organization called Session Foundation, which is based in Switzerland. According to the organization’s website, this organization works to maintain the basic spirit of the Internet, privacy, freedom and security. Its goal is to make the Internet the same again where users have complete control over their data.
No need for phone number or e-mail
The biggest feature of Session is that neither a phone number nor an email address is required to use it. That means your account remains completely anonymous. The app gives you an Account ID, through which you can talk to anyone securely. Your identity, contact information or IP address is never revealed. Another great feature of Session is that it uses Lokinet onion routing technology, which hides your IP address. That means neither the app knows from where you are online, nor does any third person.

While other apps have their servers in one place, Session’s network is based on user-operated servers spread across the world. This means that there is no central server in it. Therefore the risk of data leak or hacking is almost zero. With this, not only the user’s chat remains secure but no organization or government can track your messages or data.
Data is not saved, tracking is not possible
Session neither saves the user’s chat history, nor logs metadata (such as who is talking when and with whom). This means that the user’s online activity remains completely private. Many times governments or companies prepare profiles of users on the basis of these metadata. Session ends this process completely.
Open-source and free
The Session app is free and open-source. This means that any developer can look at its code and check whether it is really secure or not. This app runs without any ads and trackers.
Group chat and file sharing
In this app, users can create group chats of up to 100 people, which are end-to-end encrypted. Apart from this, voice clips, photos, documents or any file can be shared. These pass through an onion routing network called Lokinet, which runs on decentralized service nodes (Oxen network). This keeps metadata (like IP address, location) hidden.
How different is Session App from WhatsApp and Telegram?
Telegram, WhatsApp and Session, all three chatting platforms do the same thing, but there is a big difference in their thinking, technology and security features. Session is a new messaging app which has been specially designed keeping privacy and anonymity in mind. While WhatsApp and Telegram keep their chat servers under the control of one place or company, Session’s network is decentralized. This means that it has no central server. Due to this, the possibility of data leaking, tracking or hacking is almost eliminated here.p
Even though all the chats on WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted (E2EE), its metadata i.e. who talked, when and with whom, this data goes to Meta (Facebook). Only “secret chats” in Telegram have end-to-end encryption, the rest of the chats are saved on the company’s cloud servers.
