As the holy month of Sawan comes out, the districts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana, Kanwaria, are seeing a huge influx of devotees of Lord Shiva, who are participating in the annual Kanwar Yatra. In view of heavy pilgrim agitations, traffic disruption and security concerns, the local administration has announced school holidays on Sawan Monday and specific dates in many areas.
These active measures aim to ensure safety of students and manage heavy legs during this sacred period. Schools will remain closed with Major Kanwar routes as devotees traveled barefoot to offer sacred water to Shiva temples.
List of districts where schools are closed today
Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
In the spiritual city of Varanasi, the house of the revered Kashi Vishwanath Temple – One of the twelve geotting – the district administration has announced that all governments and private schools will remain closed every Monday during the Savan. This includes all the schools located on the Kanvwar routes leading to the temple city. The move aims to ensure student safety among the traffic crowd due to the influx of devotees and the pilgrimage.
Budaun, Uttar Pradesh
Similarly, the Budoon district administration has closed the school every Monday during Saran. With the increasing number of Kanwari carrying on the streets, the local government issued an order to prevent disruption for both students and school staff.
Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh
In Bareilly, where devotees gathered for Jalabhishek rituals in temples like Saptnath, Guldia Gaurishankar, and Sidda Gopala Baba, the administration has also declared school holidays on Monday. The purpose of these measures is to reduce traffic flows and maintain public safety during the days of peak pilgrimage.
Haridwar, Uttarakhand
In the holy city of Haridwar – where millions of Kanwari Ganga gather water – the district administration has moved a step ahead. All schools and Anganwadi centers will remain closed from 14 July to 23 July. The purpose of the closure is to prevent overlap between school activities and large circles of Kanwar pilgrims, ensuring smooth mob management.
Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh
In Ujjain, the residence of the Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the twelve geotoringas, officials have ordered that all schools be closed every Monday from July 14 to August 11. The city experienced a major spike at the pilgrim footfall during Saran, motivating the authorities to reduce the city’s crowd and prioritize security.
Noah, Haryana
In Nuh district of Haryana, the local administration has announced a school holiday on 14 July due to the Jalabhishek Yatra, which coincides with the Kanwar Yatra. This decision helps to avoid school-time disruptions during religious events and ensures that roads are less crowded for both devotees and residents.
