President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Khanna as the 51st Chief Justice of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday.
Justice Khanna will replace Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who retired on Sunday. At 64, Justice Khanna is set for a brief tenure of six months, with his retirement scheduled for May 13, 2025.
Justice Khanna comes from a distinguished legal family; He is the son of former Delhi High Court judge Justice Dev Raj Khanna and nephew of former Supreme Court judge HR Khanna. During his career, Justice Khanna has been involved in several landmark judgments, including upholding the integrity of electronic voting machines (EVMs), declaring the electoral bond scheme unconstitutional, supporting the abrogation of Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu, And granting interim bail to former Chief Minister of Kashmir and Delhi Arvind Kejriwal.
