The Congress party has linked Mohan Bhagwat’s statement of ‘a person who aspires to be a god or a great man’ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking in Jharkhand, Bhagwat said that people should work for the welfare of humanity as there is no end to the desire for development.
Speaking at a meeting of village-level workers in Gumla, Jharkhand, Bhagwat said, “Development is something which, once we reach it, we feel we can go further. When we reach our goal, we feel there is still more to go. Then man wants to become superman. In films, supermen are shown with extraordinary powers. So man wants to have such power, but he does not stop there. Then he wants to become a dev. But the devtas say that Bhagwan is bigger than us, so he wants to become a god.”
The Congress party used Bhagwat’s remarks to take a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who during the campaign for the Lok Sabha elections 2024 had said that he had full faith that “Paramatma” (God) had sent him. “Till my mother was alive, I believed that I was born biologically. After her demise, after reflecting on all my experiences, I believe that God has sent me,” PM Modi had said during a TV interview.

The Congress described Bhagwat’s remarks as an ‘Agni missile’ targeting the prime minister’s official residence, Lok Kalyan Marg. “I am sure the self-proclaimed non-biological prime minister must have got the news of this latest Agni missile from Nagpur in Jharkhand targeting Lok Kalyan Marg,” Congress communications chief and MP Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter along with a video clip of Bhagwat’s speech.
Bhagwat was also heard saying in the speech that he was never worried about the future of the country as many people were working collectively for its betterment.
“Various experiments were done in the last 2,000 years, but they failed to provide happiness and peace inherent in India’s traditional lifestyle. After Covid-19, the world realised that India has a roadmap to peace and happiness,” the RSS chief said.
In his first comments after the results of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 on June 11, Bhagwat said that a true ‘sevak’ has no ego and serves the people while maintaining ‘dignity’. Referring to the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, the RSS chief said that ‘decency was not maintained’ during the campaign.
In the 2024 general election, the BJP won 240 seats, 63 less than it won in 2019. The saffron party had to rely on its alliance partners in the NDA to cross the majority mark of 272 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha. The party’s seats in the stronghold state of Uttar Pradesh fell to 33 from 62 seats in the last term. Uttar Pradesh sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha.
With the Congress party’s 99 seats, the opposition Indian Bloc will get 234 seats in the 2024 general election.
