The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (BMC MARD) on Monday announced that resident doctors at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College will shut down elective and non-emergency medical services from 8 am on August 13 until their demands are met.
The objective of the indefinite strike is to demand immediate appointment of a central agency to investigate the matter, implementation of the Central Security Act and immediate review and enhancement of security measures in all medical institutions.
The incident took place amid protests by junior doctors following the rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Shyambazar, Kolkata.

RG tax doctor death: Top 5 demands of BCM MARD
1) Acceptance of the demands of the residents of R.G.Kar Medical College, Kolkata.
2) A central agency should be immediately appointed to thoroughly investigate this matter and ensure justice without delay.
3) Establishment of a Central Protection Act that will specifically protect health workers and provide them the legal protection they need to perform their duties without fear.
4) Immediate audit of security measures (MSF and BMC) in all medical institutions and recruitment, especially the number of security personnel, in the presence of a MARD representative within 15 days.
5) A detailed report on the total number of CCTV cameras installed in the respective hospitals and implementation of live feed monitoring with 100% coverage of hospital areas and proper storage and backup facilities.
RG Kar doctor murder-rape case
The protest by junior doctors continued on Sunday following the tragic rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Shyambazar, Kolkata.
Authorities arrested a ‘civic volunteer’ on Saturday, who was later remanded to 14-day custody by a Sealdah court. The body of a second-year medical student was found inside a seminar hall of the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on Friday.
On Sunday, the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) AIIMS took out a candle march from the JLN Stadium to AIIMS in support of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s post graduate doctor from Chest Medicine department who was sexually assaulted and murdered.
The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) has also announced a nationwide shutdown of elective services in hospitals on August 12 to show solidarity with the residents of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College.
