Chandigarh, Taking a significant step towards equitable career planning for students, the Punjab government on Sunday launched a first-of-its-kind initiative to integrate artificial intelligence-powered career guidance in its public school system.
Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said that under the pilot phase, 25 AI-enabled career guidance laboratories were inaugurated in government and Punjab School Education Board affiliated schools.
The minister said the new initiative will help students make informed choices about their future.
Bains launched the initiative by simultaneously inaugurating laboratories at Government Senior Secondary School, Nangal and Government Senior Secondary School for Girls, Sri Anandpur Sahib.
The program, implemented in collaboration with ed-tech partner Beyond Mentor, is being offered free of cost to students, an official statement said.
The initiative is about empowering the state’s youth with the right tools at the right time, Bains said, adding that the impact, student outcomes and operational efficacy of the 25-school pilot will be closely monitored.
The statement said successful implementation is expected to pave the way for phased expansion across Punjab, making it potentially the first state in India to incorporate systematic AI-based career guidance within its public education framework.
Bains said, this initiative underlines the commitment of the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to prepare its students for the demands of the 21st century economy.
The Education Minister said, “Career guidance should not be a luxury. By bringing structured, AI-powered counseling to our government schools, we are ensuring that every child, irrespective of their socio-economic background, can make an informed choice about their future.”
Outlining the working process of the AI labs, Bains said students will undergo AI-based aptitude and interest assessment on digital platforms.
The system will generate a personalized career report, highlighting potential academic and professional pathways and then professional counselors will hold one-to-one sessions with students, including parents, to discuss the report and create an actionable plan.
The model is designed to move beyond traditional, generic advice to provide personalized, data-informed insights at an early stage,” from Class 6 onwards, he said.
PSEB Chairman Dr. Amarpal Singh stressed on the shift from exam-centric education to holistic development.
“True education is about unleashing the potential. These labs will help students understand their innate strengths and transform them into concrete career goals, moving beyond the traditional race for marks,” Singh said.
According to the official statement, Saurav Kumar, CEO of Beyond Mentor, said, “Our platform combines technology with human empathy. AI handles scalable assessment, but critical mentorship is delivered by professionals, ensuring that each child feels heard and guided.”
