New Delhi: The Maldives will vote in the country’s fourth multi-party parliamentary election on Sunday, which will also test for the first time President Mohammed Muizzu’s hostile India policy, particularly his decision to pull out Indian military personnel from the Indian Ocean archipelago. The Indian government is expecting that the main opposition and pro-India party – Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will win the majority.
According to TOI, before voting, MDP leader and former foreign minister Abdullah Shahid said his party was optimistic about victory. Because the Muizzu administration has failed in both domestic and foreign policies in the last 5 months and the people of Maldives are also seeing this. Democratic values are deteriorating under his watch.

Former Foreign Minister made this allegation
Shahid, who is also a former President of the United Nations General Assembly, said Muizzu came to power by “spreading lies and hatred” and all development projects were stopped. Thousands of people from the opposition have been threatened with suspension and dismissal from their jobs. There is a demand to restrict the delivery of essential services on the basis of political affiliation.
Muijju has been a supporter of China
“Waste and corruption are rampant,” he said, underscoring the importance of strong legislative oversight. “People are clearly seeing the decline of democratic values and principles under this administration, and we are confident they will show their reaction in their vote tomorrow.” It is known that Muizzu, often known as a pro-China leader, had defeated his MDP predecessor Ibrahim Solih in the presidential election last year, which was seen internationally as a face-off between India and China.
