A PhD graduate at the University of Manonmanium Sundarnar refused to obtain his degree from Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi during the convocation.
TN Governor RN Ravi was also seen at the event held at the VOC Auditorium at the University Campus, who is also the Chancellor of the University, who offers degrees on students. Of the 37,376 students of 104 affiliated colleges and university, 759 650 PhDs were present to obtain their degrees directly from the governor, including recipients.
According to general practice, the degree was handed over to the students before going on stage, where the governors will then personally present them. However, in an amazing step, a student, identified as Jean Joseph from Kotar, Negarkoil sidelined the governor and obtained his degree from Vice-Chancellor Chadrasar instead.
Speaking to the media, Jean Joseph explained that he decided because he believes that the governor “did nothing for Tamil Nadu or Tamil language”.
He said, “Many other people are more qualified to present degrees like Chief Minister or Education Minister. It should be a student’s choice. My fellow students appreciated my decision. If it was wrong, no one congratulated me. I do not want to take my degree from anyone who does not respect our land, language and identity.”
Jean Joseph completed his B.Com at Hindu College, Negarkoil, chased MCA at Mapko College, Shivkasi, and recently earned PhD in Human Resource Management from Manonmanium Sundaranar University.
The incident comes against the backdrop of the ongoing tension between Governor Ravi and the ruling DMK and his colleagues, who have repeatedly criticized him for his controversial comments. In particular, Jean Joseph’s husband, Rajan, DMK’s District Student Wing is the secretary.
