Hundreds of youth took to the roads on 20 September 2025 in Peru’s capital Lima. This demonstration was mainly organized by Jane ji, ie the new generation of youth. The main objective of the youth was to raise their voice against ‘corruption, economic insecurity and pension reform law’.
This protest organized by a youth group named ‘Generation ji’ is part of the increasing social dissatisfaction in Peru against protest, organized crime, corruption in government posts and recent pension reforms. About 500 people gathered in the city center in the presence of heavy police force. What is the reason for this protest?
In fact, recently the Congress of Peru made a change in the private pension fund, which fears the youth that their future savings will be unsafe. Also, rising crime rate and government corruption have increased the restlessness of the youth.
The protesters expressed their pain and anger with the help of social media platforms and gathered at one place. Seeing the increase in dissatisfaction, the police took the front. Tear gas was used to disperse the crowd and about three policemen were injured in this violent clash. According to the radio station Exitosa, his reporter and a cameraman were reportedly injured by pellets fired by law enforcement agencies.
In Nepal too, this month, the youth of Jane ji became similar active, protested extensively against the government and Parliament. These youth -led demonstrations in Nepal affected the Prime Minister’s resignation and even the appointment of the interim Prime Minister.
In both countries, young protesters used social media, mimes and pop culture symbols. For example, some protesters in Peru took the symbol of ‘One Peace’ anime as a flag. In Nepal too, youth continued to spread anti -government slogans through digital activism. It was expressed that Jane ji wants to be ‘not just voters, but active partner’ in politics.
This trend is also being seen globally. In Bangladesh, the youth in Indonesia and Kenya are protesting using digital platforms similarly. The popularity of President Dina Boluarte in Peru has reduced considerably in the last few months. Boluarte’s term ends next year, but the graph of his popularity has fallen significantly. The reason for this is being said to increase criminal activities and failure to tighten the corrupt. The government conducted several referendum survey, which concluded that many people consider the Peru government and the Congress with conservative majority to be corrupt. Recently, he also doubled his salary and it was also criticized all round.
