New Delhi. India’s leading SUV maker Tata Motors is celebrating an important milestone. As the company’s Tata Punch SUV has become the fastest SUV to cross 400,000 sales in just 34 months. Launched in October 2021, the Tata Punch is a subcompact SUV known for its bold design and high ground clearance. Its starting ex-showroom price in India is Rs 6.13 lakh.
Punch has captured 68% market share in the subcompact SUV segment. This success is attributed to amazing features like 90 degree door opening, electronic stability program, rain sensing wipers and highest ground clearance of 187 mm. Also, the introduction of CNG variants has also contributed significantly to the sales.
Prior to launch, the Punch received the coveted 5-star safety rating from GNCAP, making it one of the safest vehicles from that time onwards. In August 2022, it became the first SUV to achieve 100,000 sales in just 10 months. It then sold 200,000 in the next nine months and 300,000 in the next seven months.

The success of the Punch continued with the introduction of the Punch iCNG, which features Tata Motors’ innovative twin-cylinder technology. Apart from this, the Punch EV electric variant expanded its customer base and contributed to overall sales growth. These additions helped strengthen the presence of the Punch brand in the market.
EV enthusiasts also liked the Punch EV very much, which led to an additional growth of 15% in the brand’s sales. This is the first vehicle introduced on Tata Motors’ pure EV architecture, which offers long range and advanced technology.
Sales Breakdown
The petrol variants of the Punch account for 53% of sales, followed by the CNG variants at 33% and the EV variants at 14%. This wide range of options has enabled Tata Motors to effectively cater to the preferences of different customers.
The success of the Punch is evident from its market share of 17.7% in the compact SUV segment and its position as the best-selling vehicle across all segments. It has witnessed a 27% year-on-year growth in sales in FY24 and has been the best-selling SUV from January 2024 to June 2024.
