Starting from September 24, 2024, the 10th anniversary of the HWPL World Peace Summit is being celebrated in South Korea and various locations around the world, reaching 122 countries. Under the theme ‘Building a World Peace Community through Regional Cooperation’, the event commemorates a decade-long commitment to peace by global leaders and citizens, with a focus on future strategies to promote global harmony.
HWPL said the anniversary aims to review the achievements since 2014 and discuss future plans. Various sessions are being held at different levels in each country to gather regional talents and establish the necessary networks to strengthen regional networks and harness collective capabilities to tackle local peace threats.
Headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) is an international NGO affiliated with the UN ECOSOC. Through 10 years of international cooperation for peace, HWPL has 500,000 members in 170 countries and is running peace projects through MOA or MOU with 1,014 organizations in 105 countries.
HWPL Chairman Lee Man-hee pointed out that religious divisions have caused too much loss of life and property, and stressed that religions should play a leading role in dialogue and understanding. He said, “We should work together to build a world of peace and leave it as a legacy for future generations. This is to fulfill our mission as a light that brings life to the global village. Only through love and peace can the world be united.”
In line with the program keyword of regional cooperation, HWPL partnered with the intergovernmental organization Group of 7+ (G7+) and the high-level political forum organization Latin American Parliaments (ParLatino) to develop peace initiatives. The G7+ was established to unite conflict-affected countries with a vision of peace, stability and development, with 20 member countries, and ParLatino was established to promote development and integration within the framework of full democracy, with 23 member countries.
The peace project in Timor-Leste was presented by Dr. José Honorio da Costa Pereira Jerónimo, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Culture. He explained that the ministry and eight higher education institutions have partnered with HWPL to introduce peace education in the country. He said, “I believe that peace education will play a vital role, not only as a simple subject, but in helping students become future global citizens and lay the foundation for peace and stability in society.”
His Excellency Prof. Dr. Emil Constantinescu, third President of Romania and President of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Levant Cultures and Civilizations, reminded participants of the 2014 HWPL Summit, which advocated international cooperation for peacebuilding, “An incredible and impressive image proving that the belief in global peace is much more than just an initiative. It was then that I truly felt for the first time that we are all one and beyond our perceived differences. We are all united in one breath in the service of the great calling for global peace.”
This peace summit involves social representatives in peace projects in various countries. In South Korea, ‘Together: Connecting Korea’, a national campaign for social harmony, was officially launched. In collaboration with 230 civil society organizations, the campaign connects generations and diverse cultures, and carries out various environmental protection activities.
