It was the song jiyein kyun from dum maaro dum that catapulted Pope To make fame. Written by Pritam and written by Jaideep Sahni, the emotional track opened the doors for many occasions, establishing them as one of the most demanded singers in the industry. While showing the important role of Melancholic tune in his career, Papon recently shared in an interview that the music of music offered him the song after being influenced by his independent Assamese album, Jonaki Rati.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Papon admitted, “Jiaine Kun was my first big break in Bollywood. Technically, the first song I sang in Bollywood was Lats Anand (2004), but Jiyin Qin changed everything for me.”
The singer mentioned that Bollywood was never a priority before the arrival of Jiain Kun. Turning back, Papon recalled him that he was offered the song after a performance in Mumbai. He shared that director Rohan Sippy approached him after the show, and music composer Pritam called him to appreciate his talent, which would define his career before offering the success track.
As the conversation proceeded, Papon also shared how Jiain Kun challenged the vocal criteria of the industry at the time of his release. Unlike other playback singers, Papon’s earthen tone stood out, making it difficult for others to make their voice against the distinguished Bollywood hero sound, often more polished and traditional.
Papon continued, “Then, everyone was singing high. I was the only newcomer who sang that less. I actually recorded it less than seven semetones, which was originally composed by Pritam da, and the different depth became a unique power and in the beginning, it was also a challenge. It was a challenge.
The depth of the song hit a raga with the audience, eventually a anthem for lovers after heartbreak. Closing, Papon expressed his heartfelt gratitude for Pritam and Rohan Sippy for the occasion. He commented, “This is one of my full favorite for the song Live. I honestly thank Pritam Da and Rohan Sippy for relying on my voice.”
The assamese singer has many hits, including moh moh ke dhaage (dum laga ke haisha), kyon (barfi!), Humnava (Hamari Adhuri Kahani) and Bulleya (Sultan) to his credit.
