Gulshan Kashyap/Jamui: Famous ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas, who ruled everyone’s hearts with his ghazals, is no more. After a long illness, he breathed his last on Monday at the age of 73 in a hospital in Mumbai. Pankaj Udhas has millions of fans. Music lovers all over the world like him. Pankaj Udhas also has a special connection with Bihar. He used to come to Bihar regularly. Music lovers would stay awake all night to listen to his ghazals. Even during winter nights, a large crowd used to gather to listen to Pankaj Udhas. Pankaj Udhas’s coming and going to Bihar continued for years. This is the reason why today when people got the news of his death, there was despair among the music lovers of Bihar.
Actually, Gidhaur Festival is celebrated every year in Jamui district of Bihar. The Gidhaur Festival started here a few years after the end of the nineties. It was started by Digvijay Singh, who was the Minister of State for External Affairs in the Central Government at that time. Digvijay Singh was a resident of Gidhaur in Jamui district. When he started it, at that time this festival was heard without Jagjit Singh and Pankaj Udas. Another story about Pankaj Udas and Jagjit Singh is that they were friends with Digvijay Singh and this was the reason why they had a special attachment to the Gidhaur Mahotsav. Today, all three Digvijay Singh, Jagjit Singh and Pankaj Udhas are no more in this world. But even today people here tell the stories of the friendship of these three.
People were left sitting all night in the cold, there was such madness
Ghazal festivals have been organized here since the beginning of Gidhaur Mahotsav. Big Bollywood artists have come here and presented their singing among the people. At that time, people were so crazy about Pankaj Udhas’s songs Na Kajre Ki Dhar… Thodi Thodi Piya Karo… Chandi Jaisa Rang Hai Tera… that once when Pankaj Udhas was performing, there was a cold wave. the weather was. It was mildly cold in the evening, but as the night approached the severity of the cold increased. But, people were so engrossed in his singing that they remained sitting the whole night listening to his songs. Digvijay Singh passed away in the year 2010 and after that such a gathering was never organised. However, Gidhaur Mahotsav is still organized by the Department of Art and Culture. Local people say that now the same gathering is not held as it used to be during the era of Pankaj Udas and Jagjit Singh.
