‘One mistake almost damaged his spinal cord…’

Dr. Dushyant Chauhan, MBBS, MS Ortho, orthopedic and sports injury surgeon at AIIMS, Raipur, highlighted this effect of sitting at a desk for long periods of time in an Instagram post on September 1. He shared a worrying case of one of his patients who was suffering from this same habit.

Sharing the post, Dr Chauhan wrote, “He never lifted weights. But a small habit almost damaged his spine.” Explaining the case, the orthopedic surgeon said that the male patient was only 32 years old. He had not been involved in any accidents or suffered any injuries at the gym. “Just sitting at your desk for long periods of time, day after day,” the doctor shared.

‘Even walking became difficult’

His spinal problems started with mild pain in his lower back. “She thought, ‘Maybe it’s just fatigue.’ But within a few weeks… the pain in his leg started increasing. It became difficult to walk. Sitting felt like torture. Didn’t get relief even after lying down.”

The surprising part? According to the orthopedic surgeon, the patient was young, healthy and active, and yet, his spine was quietly giving up.

The Reason

When he reached out to specialists, the doctors told him, “It’s not age. It’s not a weakness. It’s your disc (short for intervertebral disc) putting pressure on the nerve.”

According to the surgeon, this is a very common problem which millions of people silently suffer from every year after sitting on chairs for long periods of time without taking any breaks. “If ignored early on, it can become a lifelong issue – sometimes even requiring surgery,” he said.

  • Back pain spreading to your leg.
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in one leg.
  • Pain increases with sitting or bending.

Finally, he warned, “Most people don’t recognize them until it’s too late. Don’t wait for it to get worse. Take action today.”
